Simple syrup is essential for making drinks & cocktails. With just a few simple ingredients, you’ll never have to buy it again.

a spoon pouring simple syrup

Simple syrup is one of the most versatile ingredients in any bartender’s toolkit. It’s used to sweeten mocktails and cocktails like my Hard Lemonade, and it can also be used to gradually sweeten drinks like Iced Tea and Lemonade to your taste as it mixes effortlessly into other liquids. You can also get creative with it, as it can be flavored with just about anything you can imagine.

FAQs

What Is Simple Syrup Made Of?

It’s made using just two ingredients – sugar and water in equal parts. It’s that simple!

What Sugar for Simple Syrup?

You can use any sugar, from granulated to superfine or confectioners’ sugar. If you prefer a richer flavor, use demerara or brown sugar.

What Is the Formula of Simple Syrup?

The formula is a ratio of 1:1 sugar to water.

Step By Step Instructions

To make the syrup, simply combine the sugar and water in the saucepan.

Then stir over low heat until the sugar is dissolved. Once it’s fully dissolved, increase the heat to medium and bring the mixture to a boil.

Once it reaches a boil, remove it from the heat and let it cool completely. Once it’s cooled, you can funnel it into the storage container of your choice.

To Make A Thick Syrup (Rich Simple Syrup)

A rich syrup is a delicious and easy-to-make alternative for those who want more body in their cocktails.

Instead of mixing one part sugar with one part water, you’ll need two parts sugar to one part water.

Making Flavored Alternatives

Add your favorite fruit or herbs to the basic syrup mixture in a saucepan over medium heat. Simmer for 5 to 8 minutes (depending on what flavor you’re using).

Sieve if necessary before cooling. Store them in an airtight container for later use!

Sugar-Free Syrup

To make a sugar-free version, mix 3?½ tablespoons of a ground stevia-based sweetener and warm it in a saucepan with ½ cup of warm water until dissolved.

Storing Instructions ?

Keep your homemade syrup in a clean airtight container. If possible, run it through a dishwasher cycle so it’s sterile. Sealed glass jars such as those used for jams or preserves are perfect since this will prevent other flavors from getting into the syrup.

Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to a month.

Flavored Simple Syrups should be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to a week.
