Simple Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

Who doesn’t love a delicious chocolate dipped strawberry? And making them homemade is easier than you think! With only three basic ingredients, you’ll be on your way to making your own! They take just minutes to prepare and they’re sure to impress!

This foolproof recipe and step by step guide will ensure your chocolate dipped beauties come out perfect every time!

Why This Recipe Works

  • Using super dry strawberries helps the chocolate stick to the strawberry
  • The use of coconut oil in the melted chocolate helps it to harden faster and thicker.
  • Using good quality chocolate gives the best possible flavor.

How to Choose Strawberries

Fresh strawberries piled high in a bowl and laying next to it on the table

Look for bright red berries with fresh green leaves. Strawberries don’t continue ripening after being picked, so look for strawberries that a bright red from top to bottom with fresh-looking leaves.

The strawberries should be free of bruises or soft spots and free of signs of mold. Be sure to check the strawberries in the bottom of the carton.

The Best Chocolate For Melting

The best chocolate for melting is chocolate that has a higher ratio of cocoa butter to cocoa (around 54% Cacao is a good base). It tastes great without being too sweet and melts smoothly.

You can get the chocolate I use on Amazon by clicking here.  (#paidlink).

Is Coconut Oil Required?

Coconut oil is not essential to make chocolate-covered strawberries, but it is recommended. Using coconut oil (the solid type) in the melted chocolate helps it stay thicker, smoother, and harden faster.

It also keeps it from hardening too much so it doesn’t break apart when you bite into the strawberry. In a pinch, the coconut oil can be replaced with butter.

How To Make Chocolate Covered Strawberries

  1. Wash and dry the strawberries until very dry
  2. Melt the chocolate with the coconut oil
  3. Dip the strawberries one by one into the melted chocolate,
  4. Place the dipped strawberry on the parchment paper. Repeat with the rest of the strawberries.
  5. Chill the strawberries until the chocolate sets, about 15 minutes.

Step By Step Instructions

Wash the strawberries and dry completely. This is important as water causes chocolate to seize and it won’t stick.

Melt the chocolate with the coconut oil in a double boiler or in the microwave (for more information on how to properly melt chocolate, see my guide on How to Melt Chocolate).

Holding a strawberry by the stem, dip into the strawberries one by one into the melted chocolate, lift and twist slightly, allowing any excess to fall into the bowl.

Place the dipped strawberry on the parchment paper.

Repeat with the rest of the strawberries. Chill the strawberries until the chocolate sets, about 15 minutes.

For a white chocolate drizzle, dip a fork in melted white chocolate and drizzle the white chocolate over the chocolate dipped strawberries.

How Do You Get Chocolate To Stick To Strawberries?

Be sure to dry the strawberries completely before dipping them into the chocolate.

Can you leave chocolate covered strawberries in the fridge overnight?

Yes, they can be stored in an airtight container for up to three days.

How do you keep chocolate covered strawberries from sweating?

To avoid sweating, don’t chill the strawberries before serving. They can be kept at room temperature for 8-10 hours without a problem.

Can I make chocolate covered strawberries the day before?

Yes, they can be made a day ahead as long as the strawberries are fresh and firm.

Should Strawberries Be Room Temperature Before Dipping In Chocolate?

It’s not necessary to have them at room temperature. If using cold strawberries, be sure to wipe any moisture before dipping each one.

Erren’s Top Tips

  • If using a double boiler for melting chocolate, be sure to dry the bottom of the bowl after removing it from the double boiler. Water will cause chocolate to seize so you want to avoid it getting in the bowl at all costs.
  • Melting chocolate in the microwave is faster than a double boiler, but it can burn if you don’t watch it carefully. Stick to checking it 30-seconds at a time.
  • For a white chocolate drizzle, dip a fork in melted white chocolate and drizzle the white chocolate over the chocolate-dipped strawberries.
