Garlic bread is an Italian food staple.  I mean who wants a plate of pasta like Fettuccine Alfredo or Spaghetti Bolognese without a basket of fresh, warm garlic bread to go with it?  This recipe makes fantastic homemade garlic bread with just a few simple ingredients.

Why This Recipe Works

  • Using butter instead of oil adds flavor that’s indulgent and delicious.
  • Fresh garlic instead of garlic powder gives it that distinctive taste that can’t be beat.
  • The sea salt gives it an extra special touch.
  • The sprinkle of parmesan cheese is the perfect finishing touch.

The only thing you need for amazing homemade garlic bread is butter, garlic, parsley, flaked sea salt and a touch of parmesan cheese.  what makes this recipe stand out from the rest – the crunch and flavor the sea salt brings.  It really is outstanding.

Ingredient Notes

ingredients: bread, butter, garlic and parsley
  • Bread:Fresh, Italian or French bread is best for garlic bread.  Something with a crusty exterior and chewy, soft center that won’t get soggy when it bakes.
  • Butter: For the best flavor, always use good quality, real butter not margarine.   As this recipe calls for adding salt, I recommend using unsalted butter and tasting as you go.
  • Garlic: Fresh chopped garlic gives the best flavor but you can use garlic paste or frozen chopped garlic.
  • Parsley: Fresh chopped parsley gives the best taste but you can use dried in its place.
  • Cheese: I like to use parmesan cheese but you can use any other Italian hard cheese. If you want your homemade garlic bread really cheesy add some mozzarella before you put it in the oven.
  • Seasoning: Flaked sea salt takes the seasoning to another level, along with fresh ground black pepper.

How To Make Perfect Homemade Garlic Bread

  1. Mix together butter, chopped garlic and chopped parsley.
  2. Season the butter mixture.

Make ahead and Freezing Instructions

  • To make ahead, follow the recipe to step 6 then wrap and place in the fridge for up to two days. Bake when needed.
  • Once cooked you can store the garlic bread for up to 3 days in the fridge, reheat in the oven.
  • Freeze the cooked garlic bread wrapped in a freezer-safe container for up to three months. Defrost thoroughly in the fridge and bake until heated through.

Erren’s Top Tips

  • Use fresh, Italian or French bread with a crusty exterior and chewy, soft center that won’t get soggy as it bakes.
  • Use fresh garlic, never the jarred or powdered stuff.  The flavor is worth the extra effort.
  • For the best flavor, always use good quality, real butter not margarine.   As this recipe calls for adding salt, I recommend using unsalted butter and tasting as you go.
  • No fresh parsley?  Dried parsley has very little flavor so substitute with dried oregano or Italian seasoning.
  • Sea Salt Flakes work best for sprinkling at the end as it won’t dissolve into the butter when baked. The crunch is fabulous!
  • Want Cheesy Garlic Bread?  Add mozzarella and Parmesan on the bread just before baking.

FAQs

How do you keep garlic bread warm?

To keep garlic bread warm, wrap in foil and leave in the oven set to the lowest temperature.

Can You Freeze Garlic Bread?

o freeze garlic bread, prepare the bread with the garlic butter and place in the freezer on a cookie sheet (butter side up), for thirty minutes. Then wrap well in plastic wrap and return to the freezer for up to three months.
