A Chocolate Glazed Donuts Recipe Baked at Home

These Easy Baked Glazed Chocolate Doughnuts are a sweet, family-friendly homemade treat that will be gobbled up in seconds by children and adults alike.

They are soft, flavorful and so much better than other baked doughnuts I’ve tried.  Most have been doughnut-shaped cakes, but these really do taste like doughnuts – delicious, you can’t eat just one doughnut!

Why This Recipe Works

  • Using good quality cocoa powder gives a deeper chocolate richness.
  • Replacing the oil you find in most donut recipes with melted butter gives a much more flavorful result.
  • Double Glazing gives an extra thick coating of glaze.

Baked Donuts Anyone Can Make

Making baked doughnuts is so simple! All you need is one bowl, one wooden spoon, and a donut pan!   The hardest part is melting the butter that I used instead of all oil, but it’s well worth it because it adds a lot of flavors.

How to Make Easy Baked Glazed Chocolate Donuts

To make these Baked Glazed Chocolate Doughnuts, generously grease the pan and fill the doughnut sections 3/4 of the way to allow them to rise, but not so much they are difficult to get out of the pan.

The donut pan with the batter filling each section 3/4 of the way through.

Once baked, they should be dipped in the glaze while still warm.  I did mine one at a time and then went back to the first and did a second coat.

Cool completely on a wire rack to allow the glaze to set.

once the glaze is set, serve and enjoy!

This the pan I have. You can get a pan like mine, here on Amazon . (#paidlink).  I highly recommend the two-pack.

This recipe makes 18 doughnuts so if you don’t have two, it will take quite a while to get through the batter.

Prep Time: 15 minutes mins
Cook Time: 17 minutes mins
Total Time: 32 minutes mins
Serves 18 donuts

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large egg (lightly beaten)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter (melted)
  • 2 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
For the double glaze: (Note: if you plan to do just one layer, half the recipe)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 10 to 12 tablespoons milk
  • ¼ teaspoon salt (optional)

Instructions

For the Donuts
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease 3 (6 section) doughnut pans well.
  • Into a large bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, melted butter, vegetable oil, and vanilla.
  • Stir the wet mixture into the dry ingredients until just combined. If the mixture looks dry or gummy, add more milk until it loosens into a batter.
  • Spoon the batter into the baking pans, filling each one a little more than three-quarters full.
  • Bake for 17 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool for 5 minutes, then tap the doughnuts out onto a sheet pan.
For the Glaze
  • Combine all the ingredients in a medium bowl and mix until smooth.

  • Place baking paper under wire racks to catch the excess glaze.
  • As each batch is finished baking, coat the hot donuts in glaze on both sides by dunking each side quickly. Set them on a wire rack to let the excess drip off onto the baking paper underneath.
  • Once you reach the end, re-dip for a second time.

I enjoyed making them, the glaze was great, but the dough wasn’t. The donuts were dense and kind of flavorless. Definitely not sweet. I had an issue with the glaze continuing to run off the donuts endlessly after coating.

I’m so glad you enjoyed the glaze! For the donuts, if they turned out dense and not as sweet as you expected, a few things might help:
Overmixing the batter can make baked donuts dense—try mixing just until combined.
Adding an extra tablespoon or two of sugar can enhance the sweetness.
Milk choice matters! If you used a lower-fat milk, whole milk will yield a richer texture.
For a lighter texture, replacing half the butter with oil can make them softer.
For the glaze running off, it may help to let the donuts cool slightly before dipping or to thicken the glaze by adding more powdered sugar. I appreciate your feedback and hope you’ll give them another try!

Double dipped deliciousness! My husband works at a food warehouse and brought home 4 containers of “damaged” Hershey’s cocoa powder. I wanted a donut recipe that didn’t require yeast. These were perfect. I’m gonna check out more of your recipes so I can use up the rest of this cocoa powder. Nom nom nom! 😋

These were seriously the best donuts ever! But let’s be completely honest… the hardest part was not melting the butter. The hardest part was spooning the batter into those donut wells 🙂 Also, do yourselves a favor and double the recipe right from the start. They are that delicious.

I mixed up the ingredients and discovered I couldn’t find the donut tins. After much frustration, I baked them in greased mini muffin trays at 350 for 12 minutes and they were perfect and delicious. They were like donut holes. I eventually found the donut tins so will try them next time.

That does sound frustrating, Barbara! I am so glad you decided to try the mini muffin tins and that they still came out delicious!! That is actually great feedback for people looking for bitesized donuts. Thank you for sharing! 🥰

I made these this morning run . They’re so good! Not too sweet. I’m so glad I bought the trays and found your recipe.
I might have over filled the trays, I only got 12 but they didn’t run over. Will definitely make again!

Hi Savannah! Thank you for trying out the recipe, and we appreciate your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that the donuts turned out too sweet for your taste, especially for your little one. Adjusting sweetness can be a personal preference, and we totally understand. If you decide to give it another try in the future, feel free to reduce the amount of sugar in the recipe to better suit your family’s taste buds. We’re glad you found the process easy, though.

These were delicious! And very easy to make. My glaze seemed to be a bit thicker than it should have been, but that’s my error. I made these for a church function and did two batches. They were the first ones eaten!

Im a newbie when it comes to making doughnuts and these came out great! I used black cocoa powder for a more rich chocolate flavor and only dipped in glaze once. My family loved them. I definitely recommend adding the salt to the glaze as it helped cut through the sweetness and helped all of the rich flavors of the doughnut come through.

Congratulations on your successful doughnut-making venture! It’s wonderful to hear that your family enjoyed them. Using black cocoa powder was a brilliant choice to achieve a rich chocolate flavor. Your tip about adding a pinch of salt to the glaze is excellent, as it can indeed balance out the sweetness and enhance the overall taste of the doughnuts. Keep up the great work in the kitchen!
